The Language of Worship

The Rev Alex W Sawyer, OBE, MC, TD, DD, Minister of Mertoun and Maxton

This essay sets out to reflect on changes within the language of worship. It traces Jewish, Greek and Latin roots and makes a brief mention of Reformation heritage before addressing itself to the issues prominent around the time of the founding of the Church Service Society. It offers suggestions for current practice so that on the one hand an “arid intellectualism” may be avoided, and on the other hand “subjective sentimentalism”.
